Walmart is finally adding Tap to Pay at its U.S. stores and Sam’s Club locations. The rollout begins August 24, 2026, at select sites, with the company planning to expand the feature to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of the year.
Shoppers will be able to use eligible contactless cards, phones, and smartwatches at checkout. The new option will sit alongside existing methods such as cash, traditional credit and debit cards, and Walmart Pay. Eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards can also be added to digital wallets for contactless use.
Fuel stations are scheduled to receive the capability by mid-2027.
When and Where Shoppers Can Expect the Change
The initial phase starts Monday, August 24, at a limited number of Walmart stores and Sam’s Club warehouses. Walmart has not publicly listed the first locations. The company aims to complete the rollout across every U.S. store and club before the end of 2026.
Gas pumps and fuel stations will follow later, with full availability targeted for the middle of 2027.
This marks a significant shift for the retailer. For years Walmart relied primarily on its proprietary Walmart Pay system, which uses a QR code generated in the Walmart app, rather than the near-field communication technology used by Apple Pay, Google Pay, and most contactless cards.
How Tap to Pay Will Work at Checkout
Once the feature is live at a location, customers can simply hold an eligible contactless credit or debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch near the payment terminal. The transaction processes without inserting or swiping a card and without opening the Walmart app.
Compatible digital wallets include those that support standard NFC payments. Shoppers can also load their Walmart, Sam’s Club, or OnePay cards into supported wallets and use those for tap transactions.
Existing payment choices remain fully available. Customers who prefer cash, chip cards, or the familiar Walmart Pay QR code can continue using them. At Sam’s Club, members still have access to Scan & Go for scanning items and paying through the app while bypassing traditional checkout lines.
Why the Move Matters for Everyday Shoppers
Contactless payments have become standard at most major U.S. retailers. Walmart’s long resistance stood out, especially as competitors and even many smaller stores adopted the technology. Customer requests for Apple Pay and similar options had grown louder over time.
By adding Tap to Pay, Walmart is responding to that demand while keeping its own payment tools in place. The company has framed the change as expanding choice rather than replacing existing systems. Shoppers who already carry contactless cards or use phone wallets will no longer need to adjust their habits when shopping at Walmart or Sam’s Club.
The staggered timeline means availability will vary by store in the coming months. Customers can expect the option to appear gradually rather than overnight.
What Remains the Same and What Comes Next
Walmart Pay continues to offer app-based payment plus access to purchase history, digital receipts, and Walmart+ fuel savings. Sam’s Club members keep their Scan & Go convenience. Cash and traditional cards stay accepted.
The fuel-station expansion in 2027 will close one of the remaining gaps for drivers who prefer contactless payment at the pump.
For most shoppers, the practical takeaway is straightforward. Beginning next week at select locations and expanding through the rest of 2026, a simple tap with a card, phone, or watch will become another routine way to pay at Walmart and Sam’s Club.
