Tommy Edman delivered a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning Friday night, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Dodger Stadium. The walk-off hit scored automatic runner Kiké Hernández and extended the Dodgers’ winning streak to four games.
The NL West leaders improved to 78-51 and remained the only undefeated team in extra innings in the majors this season at 5-0. Pittsburgh fell to 63-67 and opened a nine-game road trip with a frustrating one-run loss.
Early Lead, Quick Response, and a Two-Run Homers Trade
Pittsburgh struck first in the opening inning. Brandon Lowe reached and scored on a Nick Gonzales single to center, giving the Pirates a 1-0 edge.
The Dodgers answered immediately. Shohei Ohtani walked, and Max Muncy launched a two-run home run to right field, his 26th of the season. Los Angeles led 2-1 after one.
Gonzales produced another RBI single in the third, plating Lowe again to knot the score at 2-2. The Dodgers responded once more in the bottom half. Mookie Betts ripped a two-out, two-run single to center that scored Hunter Feduccia and Ohtani, restoring a 4-2 advantage.
Those four runs through three innings proved to be all the offense Los Angeles would generate until the 10th.
Yamamoto Sets the Tone Before the Bullpen Drama
Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered another strong outing for the Dodgers. The right-hander worked 6⅓ innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking one. He threw 107 pitches and left with a two-run lead after putting the tying runners on in the seventh. The bullpen stranded both.
The Pirates finally broke through against Kyle Hurt in the eighth. Bryan Reynolds reached, and Oneil Cruz crushed a two-run homer to center field, his 16th of the year, tying the game at 4-4.
From there the pitchers took over. Neither side scored in the ninth. The game headed to extras with the automatic runner rule in effect.
Edman’s Clutch Hit Ends It
In the top of the 10th, Evan Phillips navigated a dangerous situation. Reynolds singled to put runners on the corners, but the Pirates could not push a run across. An intentional walk to Cruz was followed by a double-play grounder that ended the threat. Phillips earned the win with a scoreless inning.
In the bottom half, Hernández started at second base as the automatic runner. After a strikeout and an intentional walk to Betts, Kyle Tucker grounded into a force play. That left runners at the corners with two outs.
Edman stepped in against Gregory Soto. Down 0-2, he lined a single to left field that scored Hernández cleanly. The Dodgers poured out of the dugout as the stadium erupted.
“Just tried to get something up,” Edman said afterward. The contact was enough.
What the Win Means for Both Clubs
The victory marked the Dodgers’ first four-game winning streak since late July. They have now taken eight of their last 11 and continue to hold first place in the NL West. Yamamoto’s consistency—nine strikeouts for the second consecutive start—gave the club a reliable foundation, while the bullpen and a timely hit closed it out.
For the Pirates, the loss stung. They forced extras with Cruz’s power and had opportunities in the 10th, yet came up empty. Soto absorbed the defeat. Pittsburgh faces a demanding stretch of road games ahead and must find ways to convert late chances against contending clubs.
Attendance reached 51,872 on a clear night at Dodger Stadium. The series continues this weekend, with both teams knowing one swing can decide a tight contest. On this night, Edman’s single provided the decisive difference.
